What is estate planning

Estate planning is an important activity that every individual should complete at some point during their lifetime. Estate planning involves the formation of a series of documents, including a will, that outline what will happen to a person’s estate if they pass away or experience a serious incident or disability.

Estate planning clarified

When referring to one’s estate, this can encompass a broad range of tangible and intangible assets, such as insurance schemes, real estate and savings. Estate planning is the process of outlining exactly who will become the beneficiaries of your estate, how that estate will be distributed and under what circumstances.

Estate planning can take on the form of a will, a trust, or both. It also includes the employment of a Power of Attorney, who will take on full responsibility of one’s estate under certain circumstances, such as disability. The Power of Attorney needs to be an individual with whom great trust can be placed in, as they may be held responsible for the entirety of one’s wealth at some point during their lifetime.

Estate planning is an efficient and resourceful way of ensuring minimal financial complications for both yourself and your family. Without an estate plan, your estate will be subjected to a long-winded probate procedure, whereby courts will decide the future of your assets.

There are many historical examples of people who have failed to produce an estate plan during their lifetime, and this can have serious detrimental consequences on one’s future. In many cases, people who were largely unconnected to the individual in question ended up inheriting large sums of money or other forms of estate. To contrast, close family or friends were unable to inherit any estate, due to a lack of legal data.
